An Australian Story
Perfume Country ® - The Rose Oil Farm
Situated on the flats of Slate Quarry Creek, just five kilometers from the historic town of Gundagai, is an adventure unfolding. In early 2000, local boy Graham Smith and business partner Leo Pendlebury, decided to venture into growing roses, for the express purpose of extracting oil from their beautiful flowers.
On the 1st July 2000, planting of our selected roses began. As usual it was a bitterly cold winter, with short warm sunny days.
Why roses you may ask!? It was to be a hobby that would keep us active in retirement but it has now evolved into a very busy lifestyle.
The winter pruning proved to be a huge task which took several weeks to complete by hand. We now encourage our cows to complete a summer prune that saves us many hours of hard work. The reward is always a glorious field of pink.
Harvest takes place from mid October to late November. The jokes have always been ‘Only pick the pink ones’ and ‘where am I up to?........ just keep picking!’
After the rose oil is extracted from the petals it is used to create our Perfumes & personal care range of products under our private label of Damasque®.
The adventure continues………….
